Omicron Nu Chapter History
January 19th, 2002 – The Victory Chapter
The history of the Omicron Nu chapter is a story of tremendous struggle. The quests to bring a chapter of Kappa to Lander's campus begin in 1988 when two young students contacted Brother Reginald Shaw. Due to problems concerning the student's transcripts, the two young men efforts were futile. Brother Shaw remained vigilant to the cause of making brothers at Lander, and the fruit of his labor was manifested in the Spring of 1994 when Brother Lamonte Barnes became a member of the noble Klan. Lamonte made the acquaintance of a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity from the X P chapter, Brother James "Doc" Byers. With the help of Brother Byers and Brother Reginald Shaw, Advisor of the Gamma Nu Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Brother Barnes was the first member of the Gamma Nu colony at LU.
Brother Barnes remained the sole Kappa on the yard until he graduated. The fraternity faced a 2-year moratorium due to the tragic death of Michael Davis. After the moratorium, Brother Torri Toland was initiated in the Spring of 1996, and he was the first Kappa on the yard since Brother Barnes graduated. The next group of men who were brought into the bond in the Fall of 1996 were Rev. Curtis Patterson and Kyle Craigo. The next line was in the Spring of 1997, and Brother Marvin Reaves was brought into the bond. This increased the chapter to four active members, and chapter needed seven to be recognized as a student organization.
In the Spring of 1998 the chapter received the magical number of seven by initiating three new brothers: Kevin Garner, Michael T. Goodwin, and James "Big Game" McConnell. The next line included the first initiates from Anderson College. This line was Fall 1999, and the brothers were Steve McConnehead, Henri' Thompson, and Damien McCall. The next line was the 3 Kings of Komedy Fall 2000, and this group consisted of Theo Hilton, Dearon "Dusty" Tyler, and DeAndre Newton. The next line to be initiated was Fall 2K1, and they were Jason Mahoney, Corey Allen, and Jamie Lucas.
The chapter still did not have an identity, and were known as Gamma Nu at LU. This all was changed on January 19th, 2002 when the chapter was officially chartered as The Omicron Nu chapter.
Hence the charter members are:
Lamonte Barnes, Torri Toland, Rev. Curtis Patterson, Kyle Craigo, Marvin Reaves, Kevin Garner, Michael T. Goodwin, James McConnell, Steve McConnehead, Henri' Thompson, Damien McCall, Theo Hilton, Dearon Tyler, DeAndre Newton, Jason Mahoney, Corey Allen, Jamie Lucas
The Brothers of Omicron Nu chapter realizes that the chapter is young, and it has a great task ahead of itself. The chapter realizes that it must perform in a manner of perfection. The brothers are excited about the future of the chapter, and the chapter yields Deference to those who toiled and strove before them.
Omicron Nu - We rate ability in men by what they finish, not by what they attempt.
